Originally a company town (built in the early 1980's to service the coal mine) Tumbler Ridge boasts some unique features.
The town center was designed to slow the power-ful southwesterly winds. The downtown core main street was aligned in a north cast-southwest direction so that residents could enjoy the
- and is protected by the Tumbler Ridge to the northeast.
Built on a plateau on the side of a mountain the town of TR expands over 3 distinct levels. The upper and lower levels are exclusively residential with the middle level comprising of housing and the main town site.
