Search for Freedom
To find their personal freedom
 is everyone's natural quest
And until they have found it
Their minds can never rest

They may not fully understand
Or reasons they can never give
But they must search to find it
For without it, they cannot live

A child will leave his mother
Or flee from their native land
And if you try to stop them
They will fight you all they can

They will climb every mountain
And follow the summer breeze
They may travel a winding road
Or sail the lonesome seas

We cannot help them find it
Each child must search alone
Be it in a far off country
or Fourteen blocks from home

Not everyone will find it
Or know when it arrives
Nor will they always keep it
For the rest of their lives

Others will have learned
Of the secret they possess
The freedom is within them
If they can pass the test

To know it does not matter
Where in the world you be
It's the person you are with
That will help set you free

For Caring, Sharing, Loving
And a future bright to be
This bring peace of mind
Which is truly being free!
While in California one of my co-workers was a single mother.

Discovering that I sometimes wrote poetry she asked if I would  write a poem for her -

Knowing how Americans love their idea of freedom I chose this for my theme.

After reading it she began to cry. This was not the reaction I was expecting nor hoping for.

Seeing my concern she explained: the message had hit very close to home.

She was having difficulties with her teenage son and his struggle for independence.

During an argument he had attacked a boy and was currently under house arrest and had to wear an ankle bracelet.

His anger had cost him the thing he had cherished the most - his freedom.
